THE TRAILS

CURRENT STATUS (04/20/04)

Well, spring is doing it's thing. With these heavy rains we request that you wait until the trails dry out. If you go out and find that the trails are rideable please let us know so we can update this notice

All of our trails are located in Comlara Park, which is about 15 miles from Bloomington/Normal. The easiest way to get to the trails is through I-39, which runs from Bloomington/Normal to Rockford. Take exit 8 (Kappa, Bloomington lake) and head west. Stay on that road (McLean County Road 8) for 3.8 miles. (The road will veer to your left around a lake) until you see a big, open parking lot on the left hand side. This is the main parking lot and one of the trailheads. There is a board with a map of the trail system and assorted information about the trail and CORBA.

TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS

All of our trails, except the new one, are labeled with numbers. You will see the numbers at the start and end of each trail, usually on a tree trunk. They are numbered starting from the spillway towards the south-east. Click here for a (small) map

Please keep in mind that assesing the difficulty level of a trail is totally subjective matter and it's not an exact science.

TRAIL 1

Intermediate

This trail is on the sort side and is quite tight with fun twists and a small ravine. It starts at the spillway, traverses a little of the country trail and then runs quite close to the water's edge.

TRAIL 2

Intermediate to easy

This trail really has several alternatives depending on how you decide to ride it - it crosses the county trail several times. Amongst its features you will find a steep ravine, and a couple of bridge crossings. Be careful on the bridges when it's wet - we've had a couple of bad crashes there!

Paul - sans lid - inaugurates the new county trail bridge

Trails 2 and 3 are connected by a county trail with 2 bridges (one of which Russ likes to use as a diving board). You will find a short ascent / descent, some fast sections and a couple of turns that will extract their payment if you don't pay attention (Just ask Carlos). At the intersection of this county trail and trail 3 you will also be able to go to the main parking lot.

TRAIL 3

Intermediate

Eric clears the logpile during Mud, Sweat & Gears '03

Trail 3 is a short and tight section of single track with fun twists, two small log piles, a small ravine and some off-camber turns. Please resist the temptation to follow the deer trail - it's no fun to ride anyways.

TRAIL 4

Easy

This trail is probably the easiest in the whole system, and at the same time it's the fastest after the new trail. There are two ravines, and a small log pile. Don't get too carried away though - there are plenty of trees to help you come to a sudden stop!!

TRAIL 5

Intermediate

This is the second most demanding trail of the whole system - it's a fun workout with several ravines of different sizes. At the end there's a whole section of pine trees that Paul, our resident tree-hugger, favors. This trail will take you to the very edge of the lake right at the apex of a tight turn - pay attention or swim!!!

TRAIL 6

Intermediate This is our slowest, twistiest, tightest singletrack. This is Gary's favorite trail. You don't want wide handlebars here - if you don't believe us just look at Carlos' grips. Even though it's mostly flat you will find 2 big logpiles, several small ones and enough tight corners to make a fighter pilot dizzy!!

BOVINE RUN

Intermediate

This trail, formerly known as "The New Trail", is a loop that runs for about a mile and starts at the other side of the road near the spillway, on the north-western part of the trail system. It starts with some twisty singletrack and begins to descend - you will build speed quite rapidly. Depending on which way you start riding it, you will descend through a wooded section - with the only logpile - or through a meadow. Once you've finished descending you will have a chance to start climbing and find out why the first half of the loop is so much fun. Once you complete the loop you should turn around and do it the other way around.

ON THE DRAWING BOARD

Projected to be hard

This is our next project - this will be a hard and technical trail on the northwest side of the spillway - we will take advantage of the highest hill in the Comlara Park!!! Once you get to the halfway point of the trail you will have the chance of going to the new trail (unless the spillway has been open and the crossing is flooded) or continue riding the loop. Just as with the new trail, you will enjoy the first half and then pay to the gods of singletrack in the second half.

As you can see - this is a multiuse trail. Some users refuse to stay on it, though
